What is up with my annoying eye twitch?

Blepharospasm!  They are so annoying, right?  You feel like the whole world can see your little involuntary twitch, that you can't seem to control in any way.  Have no fear I'll give you a handful of reasons as to why this happens and maybe you can actually control it.

Blepharospasm (bleph means eyelid in doctor talk) is a function of your facial nerves going into a spasm.  Think about it as if it were completely unrelated to your eye and it's more your face twitching near your eye.  The main reason this usually happens is due to too much stress, caffeine, alcohol, fatigue or dry eyes.  Once patients hear this, they either agree they have been stressed and over caffeinated lately.  So I simply suggest relaxation exercises (ie. yoga, massage, deep breathing) and reducing the coffee/soda intake by more then half.  If it is due to dry eye (ie. redness, foreign body sensation, excessive tearing), that's where your eye doctor can come in and help.  Be mindful if the twitch continues for a prolonged period of time (ie. more then two weeks of constant twitch) with other neurological factors (ringing in the ear, paralysis of hands/arms) you should contact your primary care physician.
